Lowest-Priced New Vehicles

Low price doesn't mean skimping on safety equipment anymore; some lowest-priced new cars include six standard airbags.

It's no surprise that small, economical cars dominate the list of ten lowest-priced new vehicles for the 2007 model year. They range in price from the $9,430 Chevrolet Aveo5 to the new Dodge Caliber, which is priced around $13,500.
Note that prices are current at post time for the start of the 2007 model year, and do not include taxes, destination charges, option, fees or incentives. We have included just the least expensive version of each of these vehicles.

Key issues, available vehicles and emerging choices for fuel economy minded car buyers
by Brian Chee
Introduction
You stop at the gas station, slide the credit card, tap in your zip code and bam -- you’re staring back at a hard, cold reality in brilliant LCD: $80 to fill up your SUV. Such is the state of life in America. And consider this: let’s say you purchased a large SUV two years ago, when the average price for mid-grade unleaded in most metropolitan regions was around $2.26 per gallon, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Assuming your SUV holds around 26... (more)

Volkswagen will cut the price of its Jetta compact car in the United States to help boost volume for what is already its top-selling model in the U.S. market, industry paper Automotive News reported on Monday.
It quoted Adrian Hallmark, executive vice president of Volkswagen of America Inc, as saying the company will remove some features from the Jetta as of the 2007 model year and lower the U.S. price by $1,410.
That means 2007 Jetta prices will start at $17,105 including shipping. The cheapest 2006 Jetta starts at $18,515, it said.
"If we are going to be a volume player, we have to... (more)

By Sarah Karush
The imports are really developing a strong foothold in the truck market. U.S. automakers are producing more hits with cars, but are facing steeper competition in trucks, an area they once dominated, according to a vehicle quality study released Monday.
The domestic Big Three had the top-scoring vehicles in five out of 10 car categories in the annual vehicle quality study by Strategic Vision Inc., a San Diego-based market research firm and consultant to automakers. A notable winner was the Ford Fusion, which prevailed in the medium car category.
In trucks, Japanese... (more)

Midsize SUVs Run Low On Sales

By Terry Box (The Dallas Morning News)
Gas prices affect them more than full-size versions
As fuel prices soar, big SUV sales sink – or so the story typically goes.
But the media may be focusing on the wrong segment, some industry officials say. Midsize truck-based SUVs are even more endangered.
Although $3-a-gallon gas has scared off some buyers of full-size sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks, it has deeply eroded the sales of the truck-based vehicles such as the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee that launched the SUV craze 15 years ago.
Although midsize SUVs introduced... (more)

DaimlerChrysler recall — second in two days — impacts 131,500 SUVs
DaimlerChrysler AG said Tuesday that it was recalling 131,500 Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicles because the plastic blades in the engine's cooling fan could separate and cause an injury.
The recall, the second in two days involving the Jeep SUV, involves 2000 and 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 4.0-liter engines. The automaker said if the fan blade separated while the hood was open, the blade could break through a cover and strike a person.
No accidents or injuries have been reported, DaimlerChrysler spokesman... (more)
